September 20 | 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm

On September 20, 2025, the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center will host an educational talk about sugar pines—once called the “King of Pines.” You’ll learn why these giant trees used to make up nearly a quarter of local forests but now are less than 5%. The drop happened because of heavy logging in the past, fire control methods that didn’t favor them, and an invasive fungus called White Pine Blister Rust. Maria Mircheva from the Sugar Pine Foundation will explain how people are trying to bring sugar pines back to Tahoe.
