Take a 75-minute guided walk through the magical grounds of Thunderbird Lodge and the Whittell Estate. This historic mansion on Lake Tahoe’s Nevada shore was built by George Whittell Jr., a man devoted to both privacy and conservation. On the tour, you’ll explore the stone mansion, secret tunnels, the card house, gardens, and possibly catch a glimpse of the legendary Thunderbird yacht (when available). You’ll also learn about Whittell’s efforts to preserve open space along the shore.
Things to Know Before Coming
Tours run on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. from late May through October 10, 2025. Reservations are required well in advance. Private vehicles are not allowed onto the estate; all guests must take a shuttle. Shuttles depart from the Travel North Tahoe Nevada Welcome Center at 969 Tahoe Blvd., Incline Village, and you should arrive about 10 minutes before the shuttle leaves. On tour days, there is also an optional wine & cheese upgrade that starts at 2:00 p.m.

You must reserve your tour slot ahead. Prices are based on tour type (standard or wine & cheese upgrade). The tours are led by knowledgeable guides.
